T1/T2 Tool Qualification

T1/T2

T1 and T2 are tool qualification categories defined in IEC 61508-3 (and adopted in ISO 26262, ISO 13849, and IEC 62061). The classification governs how rigorously a software tool used in a safety program must be qualified.

T1:

A tool whose output is not directly used in safety function development and that cannot introduce errors that propagate to the safety function. No qualification activities are required.

T2:

A tool whose output is used as part of the safety case or safety evidence (e.g., a tool that generates code, performs analysis, or produces documentation that an assessor relies on). T2 tools must be qualified to demonstrate they do not introduce undetected errors. The ASAP Platform holds T2 qualification under IEC 61508-3:2010, Cl. 7.4.4, issued by TÜV Rheinland, meaning the platform itself arrives at assessment already tried and trusted.
