Safety Case

A safety case is a structured argument, supported by a body of evidence, that a system is acceptably safe for a defined use in a defined environment. The term is used broadly across functional safety standards (IEC 61508, ISO 26262, DEF STAN 00-56) and product safety certification alike.

A complete safety case includes: the hazard analysis and risk assessment; the derived safety requirements and their traceability; architectural design evidence; hardware and software verification results; systematic capability claims; and the assessor-reviewed argument linking all of the above to the conclusion that residual risk is tolerable.
